Ductile Iron

Dura-Bar ductile iron is a cost-saving alternative to low-to-mild carbon steels and has similar strengths with excellent free machining properties. The nodular graphite provides the same free machining benefits as lead, without creating the machining and waste disposal problems. Dura-Bar ductile iron grades 65-45-12, 80-55-06, 100-70-03 and 60-40-18 will conform to ASTM A536, with the primary difference being the high nodule count and fine grain size inherent to the Dura-Bar continuous casting process. Dura-Bar’s SSDI ductile iron is similar to ISO 1083/JS/500-10. The different grades are produced by controlling the matrix structure around the graphite nodules.

Compared to low-to mid-carbon grades of steel, Dura-Bar ductile iron offers better machinability, reduced tool wear, chip control, excellent surface finish, and minimal deburring. Converting from steel to Dura-Bar ductile iron has proven to reduce overall total parts cost by up to 30 percent. Additionally, improved productivity creates improved machine utilization opportunity.
